RAF workers face redundancy threat

Hundreds of RAF workers will be sacked this week, with staff supporting missions in Libya also facing the axe.

Ground crew as well as support workers will be cut, although pilots flying missions in Libyan airspace will be protected.

This move marks the first wave of coalition cuts to services personnel as part of efforts to tackle the deficit and control defence funding. It is a stark reminder of the importance of income protection cover during uncertain times.

Along with 1,000 RAF personnel, a similar number of army staff will also discover whether or not they will lose their jobs as part of a raft of redundancies across the forces - with 11,000 sought by April 2015.

Those personnel receiving operational allowance on the front lines in Libya and Afghanistan will be exempt from redundancy, although support staff could lose their jobs.
