Women are likely to see further unemployment rises in the months to come, as a result of Government cuts in the public sector, according to the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
While noting that the the female unemployment figure is already at a 23-year high, the TUC warned that in the last 10 years, the number of women working within the public sector has risen three times faster than the rate recorded among men.
With coalition cuts already potentially forcing some people to review their income protection cover, the organisation now suggests that the North East and North West are among the areas which have high numbers of women in public sector jobs.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "Female unemployment is already at a 23-year high and, with so many women employed in the public sector, this will only deteriorate as job cuts in our health, education, local government and civil service continue to mount."
