Older people are increasingly embarking on gap year-style trips, with Australia and New Zealand among the regions that over-50s are keen to visit.
That is according to travel operator Bridge the World, which suggests that a "grown-up" market for gap years is beginning to emerge in the UK.
With an average sum of around £7,000 being spent by each older gap year goer, the firm's research shows that people are often heading away from home for as long as three months.
A range of lifestyle factors are enabling people to go on gap year-style breaks in later life, Bridge the World commercial director James Herbert said.
He added: "The over-50s are in a great position to take these trips as they're likely to have high disposable income, are usually retired and have grown-up children who have left home."
